Find Balance


Finding balance can be a challenge.

The Extra Degree

212: The Extra Degree"At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train.” Applying just one extra degree of temperature to water means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a large machine.

Straight out of the book, this simple idea built within me I read the book and I started to find possibility in everything. Better yet, I started looking at my everyday routine to see how I could make a difference. I go to the gym – I actually schedule it to make sure I do it without any excuses. At the gym though, I can get lazy and hitting the treadmill can be boring if that is all that it is. By applying the extra degree, I started to turn up my pace a little each time, try the intervals that my trainer showed me in my orientation and it actually worked. I could easily keep a 6 mile/hour pace for 30 – 40 minutes and have even been able to crank it up to 6.5 in incremental steps – it was all that extra degree - the extra degree of push that I needed in my head and on the treadmill. If I continue to apply the extra degree, I will be able to reach my goal of a 10 km run in less than 1 hour. One extra degree can make a difference.

What Goes Around Comes Around

Karma is a neat word. It has many meanings when you look it up on Wikipedia. I really like the one that talks about Karma being the effects of all deeds viewed as actively shaping past, present, and future experiences. When you think about karma and your everyday actions, you are really shaping what will happen next in your life. (Something like, what goes around, comes around) If you make a commitment or break a promise, the consequences that come next are inevitable. You will have to realize the commitment or make up for the broken promise. Eventually, people may not see you as reliable or dependable, or may even not include you because of your lack of commitment.



In order to solve this situation and eliminate negative consequences we need to attract positive karma by sticking to our word or promise. By doing this, we are enabling others to count on us to be there for them, set a good example for other to follow your lead and develop a community of co-operation.

Life Lessons from a Dental Hygienist
I don't know about you, but I have never been fond of going to the dentist. In fact, so not-fond, that I did not go for years...until I could no longer eat on one side of my mouth because of a sensitive tooth!
I bit the bullet- so to speak - and headed to a nice, new dental office in my new hometown. They quickly fit me in to see the dentist, who was very nice even though I was so nervous that I tears ran down my face the entire time I was there. After he diagnosed my issue, and set me up for cleaning (uggghhhh!!!) and deep scaling (!!@#@!$), I booked another appointment for the next day. I was pretty proud of myself.

So the next day, I headed in to meet with the dental hygenist - let's call her K. She was the sweetest, kindest person I have ever met. I apologized to her for my nervous state and of course the tears. K developed a plan to complete a quarter of my mouth at a time so that I would not have to endure the pain and stress for a long period of time. She was helpful, educational, talked me through each step and let me hold the suction tube so that I felt like I had some control over the procedure.

We got through 1/4 of my mouth after numbing and freezing...I had to book another appointment to do the next section. The office was placing bets to see if I would actually show up to do the next section. I did!!! And I was not tearful this time, just nervous. But we got through it together. K kept up a steady stream of one-sided conversation because it is tough to answer when her hand was in my mouth. K also made sure that if I needed freezing or a break, we would take it.

Needless to say, after 2 more visits, and the purchase of a Water-Pik, I am now in a better position both mentally and physically. If it weren't for the kindness of K, I never would have gone back.

Life Lessons:

•while there are scary things to do in life, we need to do them and will be better for them
•people come into your life to get you through things and teach you along the way
•be grateful for kindness and pay it forward
•there are special people in the world, sometimes you find them, sometimes they find you!

When I Grow Up

When you were asked what you wanted to be when you grew up, what did you say? Is that what you do today? Did you have a title or an image of what that was like ‘a fireman’, or ‘a teacher’ or ‘ the president’? A friend of mine wanted to be a snake – and only eat bad people! I’ll bet you didn’t say I wanted to be an empowering and empathic person in my community, or I want to be super-mom or super-dad, or I want to have the highest performing team. As kids, we think in visuals that we see around us – it is hard to see ‘empowering and empathetic’ or ‘parenting and time-management skills’ or ‘teambuilding skills’.

As we grew into mature adults, we began to see the world differently and set out parameters for our behavior and our skills. Sometimes we limited ourselves believing in what we could or could not accomplish.

Mahatma Ghandi said “A man is but a product of his own thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”


I look at my children and see that they live this philosophy so much better than I did. They are focused on career plans that include leadership ability and skills, as well as physical talent and mental aptitude. They see they can be anything they want without limitations that they put on themselves – this can even be called a dream. But it is not, it is their own belief – what they will become with focus, hard-work and dedication. And I believe they will, because they believe it.

Every once in a while you are going to come up against performance issues on your team. This "belly fat" is particularly problematic since it has been directly correlated to cardiac problems, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, sleep apnea, and the list is still getting longer. It becomes quickly apparent that lowering a high waist-to-hip ratio is necessary to enhance our quality of life as we age as well as to prevent early death.


Is it possible to target fat loss in the belly region? No! The best way to rid belly fat is to lose overall body fat. Spot fat reduction is not possible. For example, if you do crunches in an attempt to lose belly fat, you will strengthen your abdominal muscles, and if you do back extensions and lat pull-downs to strengthen your back muscles, you will improve your posture so that it may appear that your belly fat is diminishing. These exercises are excellent core-strengthening moves, however, any fat loss will be distributed over your entire body, usually more noticeably in the last place where you gained the fat.


If you really want to lose belly fat, you have to make a long-term commitment to yourself to do the work. Follow these tips and take control of your health and wellness:


1. See a doctor before starting any exercise program and follow any restrictions given.

2. You are constantly burning calories every day, while sitting, sleeping, standing. However, you will burn more calories if you move more. Start by walking more every day. Consider going outside or to a mall to walk and slowly increase (depending on your fitness level) the amount of time that you walk. Try to walk faster every day. It may be worth it to invest in a pedometer (inexpensive) and see your progress daily. Each day, challenge yourself to do more. Forget the elevator and take the stairs.


3. Get rid of all high empty calorie foods in your home and at work. That means all high-sugar, salt, fat, preservatives-filled foods, and replace them with nutrient rich foods like whole grain breads, pastas, cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean unprocessed meats, low-fat dairy products and good fats (like olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc.). 4. Cut the amount of calories you consume daily by at least 200. This requires you to log your food intake daily until you become familiar with how much you normally eat and how to cut the 200 calories. For example, substitute milk for cream in your coffee or tea, low-fat popcorn instead of buttered popcorn, eliminate butter on bread. Once you look for ways to cut 50 calories here and 40 calories there, you will see that it is not very hard to cut 200 calories. By simply doing this; you will lose 20 lbs in one year.


5. You will burn more calories by increasing your muscle mass. This means engaging in resistance exercising at least 3 times per week. I strongly recommend hiring a certified personal trainer for a few hours to teach you how to effectively weight train. The investment is well worth it. If this is not an option for you, buy a weight training instruction CD, or take a weight training class at your local Recreation Center, or join a fitness club. Weight resistance training is so important, especially as we age. It is very effective for building and maintaining bone density, boosting the immune system, building strong muscles, improving posture, as well as being a tremendous boost to feelings of well-being.


6. Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Your body needs to have adequate rest each day to restore and repair itself. Also keep in mind that, while you are sleeping, you are not eating!


By following these tips, you will be well on your way to becoming a fat burning, muscle-building, firm and toned, healthy and fit, example of how to succeed at looking good and feeling great!
